I have been trying to understand what is the most likely cause of the error 43 as in my case: I have installed the latest RC1 graphic drivers from ATI dated 02/09/06  and Vista then recognises my Display Adaptor as an ATI Radeon 96000 Series. I have a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT with 256MB DDR ram installed within the AGP slot of a GigaByte GA-7VAX motherboard with 1.5 GB of RAM and an AMD XP 3000+ 2.17Hz Processor. Safe mode with networking should boot and then you can use the system restore feature to select a previous restore point that works. When Vista is about to boot, hit the F8 key on the keyboard to bring up the additional start-up options. I think the source of the problem was step 2 (e.g multiple CPU's) after I disabled 1 my CPU's and installed the ATI driver then everything worked however I did all the above steps in order to get it to work.
